Free marketing workshop offered for small businesses

The Sellwood Bridge project will offer a free marketing workshop for small businesses, as part of the project’s outreach to local disadvantaged businesses. The event is Monday, January 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (OAME), 4134 North Vancouver Avenue. Pre-registration is required to attend. The Sellwood Bridge replacement project has officially begun.

On Friday, Dec. 16, more than 150 citizens joined Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen, Commissioners Deborah Kafoury, Judy Shiprack and Diane McKeel, Portland Mayor Sam Adams and representatives from the offices of U.S. Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and U.S. Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Kurt Schrader at the celebration. The groundbreaking took place at Sellwood Riverfront Park in Southeast Portland.

Friday groundbreaking kicks off Sellwood Bridge construction

A groundbreaking event to celebrate the start of Sellwood Bridge construction. This month work begins on the $268 million project to replace the 86-year-old bridge. The event includes the official announcement of a $17.7 million federal TIGER grant for the project from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Sellwood Bridge was the only project in Oregon to receive a TIGER grant and received the 7th largest grant out of 46 awards. A water cannon salute from the Portland fireboat Campbell will cap off the celebration.

Federal grant will help replace Sellwood Bridge

Sellwood Bridge open house will be Nov. 16 at Llewellyn School in Southeast Portland

City and county officials will convene a Sellwood Bridge open house Nov. 16 to discuss design and construction issues. The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Llewellyn School, 6301 S.E. 14th Ave.

The meeting will include drawings of the bridge, landscaping plans, a schedule for construction, details on how the existing bridge will be moved, funding and other information.

Representatives of the design firms, the general contractor, the city and the county will be on hand. Construction of the new, $268 million bridge is scheduled to start next July and end in 2015.

TIGER III Grant application submitted

Multnomah County has submitted a grant request to the Federal Department of Transportation's TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program for the Sellwood Bridge project. The TIGER program funds significant shovel-ready transportation projects that create jobs and support innovation. The $22.7 million request would fund the last 8% of the project's $268.8 million cost.

  • An update on funding, early construction and a November 16 open house
  • A presentation by architects from Safdie Rabines Architects on the overall bridge design
  • A presentation by a landscape architect with Walker Macy on plans for the westside interchange including a retaining wall on the west side of Highway 43

Sellwood Bridge project nears construction

After several years of planning and design work, Multnomah County’s project to replace the deteriorated Sellwood Bridge is approaching the construction phase.

In December, work will begin in the Willamette River to place piers for a temporary detour bridge that will be roughly 40 feet north of the existing bridge. In July 2012, in-water work is expected to begin on the river piers for the new bridge. The entire project should be completed by the end of 2015.

Broadway and Sellwood bridges closed Sunday for field work

Multnomah County Press Release - September 14, 2011

The Broadway and Sellwood bridges will be closed on Sunday, September 18 for field work projects. The projects are not weather dependent.

The Sellwood Bridge will be closed to motor vehicles from 7 a.m. until as late as 3 p.m. During the closure a contractor will remove small concrete samples from the bridge deck in preparation for the relocation of the bridge in 2012. The river spans will be moved 40 feet north next spring to create a detour bridge and make space for construction of the new bridge. A crew will fill pot holes and work on bridge traffic lights during the closure. The bridge will remain open to bicyclists and pedestrians. Motor vehicles should use alternate crossings such as the Ross Island or Interstate 205 bridges during the closure.

An open house has been scheduled for subcontractors to learn about early work packages slated for December 2011 and other opportunities for the Sellwood Bridge project. The event will be on Wednesday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Broadway Room of the Marriott Residence Inn, 2115 SW River Parkway, Portland. The event is accessible via the Portland Streetcar and limited parking is available.

The event is hosted by Slayden/Sundt, the joint venture team selected as the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) for the project. The open house will include information on the range of contracting opportunities, estimated schedules for bid applications and awards, and pre-qualification.
