Sellwood Bridge closed to motor vehicles Oct. 2 during Sunday Parkways

Multnomah County Press Release - September 27, 2016

The Sellwood Bridge will be closed to motor vehicles from 9 am to 6 pm on Sunday, October 2 during the free Sunday Parkways event for Sellwood and Milwaukie. The bridge will remain open for bicyclists and pedestrians, including thousands who will take part in the first Sunday Parkways route that includes the new Sellwood Bridge. 

The Sunday Parkways route through Sellwood and Milwaukie will be open from 11 am to 4 pm. Additional hours are needed for the bridge closure to set up traffic control for the event.

Sellwood Bridge closed Sunday for deck sealing

Multnomah County News Release - September 23, 2016

The Sellwood Bridge will be closed to motor vehicles from 5 am on Sunday, September 25 until no later than 6 am on Monday, September 26 to allow a contractor to apply sealant to the deck of the bridge. The work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of rain. If the work cannot be completed on Sunday, it is possible the bridge will be closed Monday after 7 pm to complete the work at the west end of the bridge. The bridge sidewalk will remain open to bicyclists and pedestrians.

Highway 43 will remain open to two-way traffic at all times. The posted westbound detour routes during the closure are:

  • Northbound: Hwy. 99E (McLoughlin Blvd.) to Ross Island Bridge to Hwy. 43
  • Southbound: Hwy. 99E to Interstate 205 (Abernethy Bridge at Oregon City) to Hwy. 43

Eastbound routes are the reverse.

To access the Oktoberfest Celebration at Oaks Park from the west side on Sunday, drivers should use the Ross Island Bridge. The celebration runs from September 23-25.

Multnomah County is the lead agency for the Sellwood Bridge project.

Sellwood Bridge closed July 28-31 for paving Multnomah County

Multnomah County News Release - July 25, 2016

The Sellwood Bridge will be closed to all traffic modes from 6 am on Thursday, July 28 until Sunday afternoon, July 31 to allow a contractor to pave the east approach and the interchange ramps and through lanes of Highway 43 at the west end of the bridge. Work is scheduled around the clock during the closure with night work on the west side only.

Highway 43 will remain open to two-way traffic at all times.  Traffic lanes will be shifted at times during the paving. The posted westbound detour routes during the closure are:

  • Northbound: Hwy. 99E (McLoughlin Blvd.) to Ross Island Bridge to Hwy. 43
  • Southbound: Hwy. 99E to Interstate 205 (Abernethy Bridge at Oregon City) to Hwy. 43

Eastbound routes are the reverse. 

The alternate routes for bicyclists and pedestrians are the Ross Island or Hawthorne bridges, via regional trails on either side of the river.

Highway 43 Lane Closures

In addition to the bridge closure, two lanes of Highway 43 will be closed near the bridge for night paving July 25–27, from 7 pm to 6 am. One lane will remain open in each direction. 

Sellwood Bridge construction is scheduled to be complete in November 2016.

New Sellwood Bridge opens to traffic February 29 at 8 p.m.

The 90-year old Sellwood Bridge will close to traffic for the last time on Thursday, February 25 at 7 pm so a contractor can make structural alterations for the new bridge to open to traffic.  The bridge closure will allow the contractor to remove a span between the old bridge and new bridge, demolish part of the old east approach, and set up the new bridge for traffic.  The new bridge is targeted to open the first week of March.  During the closure the contractor will be working around the clock to get the new bridge ready to open.  Highway 43 will remain open to two-way traffic.
