Bridge Concepts

The Sellwood Bridge team has made the first attempt at creating some concepts for rehabilitation and replacement of the Sellwood Bridge. Like a jigsaw puzzle, there are three parts that need to be fit together: the alignment, the interchange/intersection, and the width. Depending upon how these pieces are put together, there are potentially many different bridge concepts.

Based on what the project team heard from the public, several new alignments are shown below; including a tunnel.

The next step will be to measure the concepts against the criteria in the Evaluation Framework. If a concept doesn't meet the Purpose and Need of the project, it will be eliminated. Your input, along with technical analysis, will help to narrow the range of alternatives to a few that will be studied in detail in the Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS). After the Draft EIS is completed, the preferred alternative will be selected.

Original Five Bridge Alignments Four new alignments (three north of the existing bridge and one to the south) as well as the existing alignment are being considered. Click on the colors below to learn more about each alignment option.

Additional Bridge Alignments Suggested by the Public Several other alignments were suggested to the project team during the public workshop, through the second survey, and comments submitted online. Click on the colors below to learn more about each alignment option.

Tunnel Alignment Suggested by the Public A tunnel alignment was suggested by the public. The project team created a proposed tunnel location based on several requirements, including the angle of the road needed to get to the correct depth below the river and connection to existing streets on the east and west sides of the river. The topography (hills) on the west side were also a consideration.

Two Interchange Options Two interchange options are under consideration, one that includes a traffic signal and one that is "free-flow" without a traffic signal. Both have two levels like the existing interchange. Either one can be used with all of the new alignments and with all the bridge rehabilitation and replacement options.

Five Width Options There are almost 50 different potential combinations of vehicle lanes, flex lanes for transit, bicycle lanes, shoulders, and sidewalks. The tradeoffs among a range of bridge widths—from 31 to 92 feet—are being evaluated. The 2-lane options are consistent with the Tacoma Street Plan and Regional Transportation Plan. Wider structures would offer flexibility for more extensive bicycle and pedestrian facilities and additional multi-modal capacity, including streetcar or express transit. A wider bridge also would allow emergency vehicles to cross the river faster during periods of heavy traffic.

Each bridge width option provides opportunities for different cross-sections. Click on the cross-sections below to see the complete set of cross-section examples that were shown during the April 4, 2007 workshop.
